Gully Deep Dive
Purpose
The Gully Deep Dive is an interactive multimedia deep-sea biology learning resource that guides high school students through a submarine dive in the Gully Marine Protected Area. It uses the Gully canyon’s unique shape and biodiversity to teach ocean interconnectivity and changes in depth. Available in French and English, it includes an educator guide, a student activity, and an accessible transcript. Developed with expert advice from researchers and educators, the Deep Dive’s content is based on the real science of the Gully and structured using Ocean Literacy Principles and high school curriculae.
What is included in the Deep Dive?
A short introduction video to the Gully canyon
A ~15 minute interactive experience with nine depth levels explored in a submarine
Interactive 3D navigable maps of the Gully canyon
Nine learning callouts with animated diagrams
An educator’s guide for using the Deep Dive in a classroom setting
A student activity focusing on deep-sea interconnectivity
What topics are covered in the Deep Dive?
What is the Gully and why is it protected?
Marine Protected Area zones
Phytoplankton
Physical changes with depth

This project was completed on the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, the city of Mississauga is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
