Conservation room project: Marine life spot illustrations

Purpose

Create accurate marine science illustrations for use in the Bedford Institute of Oceanography’s Netukulimk (Conservation) Room exhibit.

In total, 14 line illustrations, an infographic, and 35 colour illustrations were produced. 18 of the colour illustrations were completed by other biomedical illustrators that I supervised, and were all completed to be consistent with existing styles of illustrations used by the client. The project was completed over a six week period.

Client testimonial

Working with Molly has been a wonderful experience! The quality and calibre of her illustrations is exceptional—not only will visitors to our exhibition leave well-informed thanks to the rigour and attention she applies to scientific accuracy in her work, but they will also be delighted by the appealing and charming nature of the various species she illustrated. Molly’s noteworthy skills extend beyond the artistic into the organizational, with her ensuring all project logistics ran smoothly and efficiently. Communicating details and feedback was a pleasure given Molly’s pro-active and highly responsive approach. We are thrilled with the final products and are looking forward to working with Molly in the future!

Project management

As the project lead, communication liaison, and manager, I was responsable for making sure everything ran smoothly within the six-week timeline. I used Notion to organize tasks and set deadlines, and OneDrive for file organization. Slideshows were used to facilitate and record feedback from the client and the BIO researchers.

Rendering

Clean line drawings were used to get feedback on accuracy before proceeding to the final colour illustrations, completed in Procreate.
